Mexican national faces charges for identity theft and passport fraud

Roger B. Handberg, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida

A Mexican national, Jose Manuel Ortiz Perdomo, has been indicted for aggravated identity theft and making a false statement on a passport application. Acting United States Attorney Sara C. Sweeney announced the charges against Ortiz Perdomo, who is 41 years old. If found guilty, he could face a federal prison sentence ranging from two to twelve years.

Court records reveal that on October 18, 2024, Ortiz Perdomo applied for a passport using another person's name. Before submitting his application, he had acquired identification documents in the victim's name. He impersonated the victim when applying for the passport and presented fraudulent identification as his own.

It is important to note that an indictment is simply a formal accusation of one or more violations of federal criminal law. Every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service (DSS). The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Michael Leath.
