The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has commenced a compliance review of the University of Maine. This action follows the state’s non-compliance with Executive Order 14201, known as "Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports," issued by former President Trump.
"President Trump has made it abundantly clear: taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars will not support institutions that discriminate against women," stated U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins. "USDA is committed to upholding the President’s executive order, meaning any institution that chooses to disregard it can count on losing future funding."
The University of Maine, a federally funded land-grant institution, receives over $100 million in USDA funding annually. Title IX mandates that education programs and activities receiving federal funds must not discriminate based on sex. Institutions must comply with federal law to continue receiving taxpayer-funded support, including USDA grants.
