CCIA criticizes Apple's removal of encryption tool amid UK government demands

Apple is reportedly removing the Advanced Data Protection (ADP) tool for UK users, following reports of the UK government's demand for back-door access to encrypted user data. The ADP tool allows users to store encrypted photos and data in the cloud with security that prevents access by anyone else, including Apple.

Matthew Sinclair, Senior Director and head of CCIA’s London office, expressed concerns over this development. "Weakening encryption for the sensitive personal data that British consumers have on their phones is a worrying step backwards," he stated. Sinclair emphasized that law enforcement should collaborate with companies to protect privacy against global threats rather than forcing them to eliminate key security measures. He urged ministers to act swiftly to ensure the UK does not become a weak link in international online safety and security efforts.
