Trina A. Higgins, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Utah
Kasey Todd Reed, a 32-year-old resident of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in Utah, has been sentenced to eight years in prison followed by three years of supervised release. This decision comes after Reed admitted guilt on December 6, 2024, to charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to cause bodily harm within Indian Country.
The sentencing was delivered by Senior U.S. District Court Judge David Sam. According to court documents and statements during Reed’s hearings, the incident occurred on May 30, 2022. Following a domestic dispute where he was pepper-sprayed, Reed returned to his partner's residence armed with a loaded .38 revolver. He fired five shots towards the home while driving past it.
Acting United States Attorney Felice John Viti from the District of Utah announced the sentencing. The FBI Salt Lake City Field Office’s Vernal Resident Agency conducted the investigation into the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sam Pead prosecuted on behalf of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing gun violence and other violent crimes through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The Department launched an enhanced strategy for PSN on May 26, 2021, focusing on building community trust, supporting preventive community organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.
