Federal inmate receives additional nine years for assaulting fellow prisoner

A federal inmate has received an additional nine-year prison sentence for assaulting another inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Thomson, Illinois. The incident occurred in 2022 when Julian Breal repeatedly kicked and punched the victim, resulting in serious injuries that required hospital treatment and surgery.

Last year, a jury found Breal, aged 47, guilty of assault causing serious bodily injury. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Iain D. Johnston imposed the nine-year sentence to be served consecutively to Breal's current term in the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The sentencing was announced by Morris Pasqual, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, alongside Douglas S. DePodesta, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jessica Maveus and Vincenza L. Tomlinson represented the government in this case.
