Vanessa Roberts Avery, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut
Marc H. Silverman, the Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, has confirmed that Godfrey Smith, also known as "Mike" and "Mikey," has been sentenced to 36 months in federal prison. Smith, aged 41 from Hartford, will also serve three years of supervised release following his imprisonment for trafficking methamphetamine.
The case against Smith began in April 2024 when the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Hartford Task Force and Middletown Police Department conducted a controlled purchase of about 53 grams of crystal methamphetamine from an individual in Middletown. Investigators identified Smith as the source during this transaction. Later, on August 22, 2024, another controlled purchase was made directly from Smith in Hartford involving approximately 240 grams of crystal methamphetamine.
Smith was arrested on September 4, 2024, following a federal criminal complaint. At the time of his arrest, authorities seized around 27 grams of crystal methamphetamine, along with other substances including cocaine and crack cocaine. Additionally, $3,200 in cash and a box of .45 caliber ammunition were confiscated.
On December 5, 2024, Smith pleaded guilty to charges related to possession with intent to distribute and distribution of five grams or more of methamphetamine.
Currently released on a $100,000 bond, Smith is scheduled to report to prison by April 30.
The DEA's Hartford Task Force led the investigation with personnel from various police departments across Connecticut and assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney A. Reed Durham.
