Guatemalan national faces charges for unlawful transportation of aliens

Roger B. Handberg, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida

Acting United States Attorney Sara C. Sweeney has announced an indictment against Timoteo Son-Gonzalez, a 40-year-old Guatemalan national. The charges include unlawful transportation of an illegal alien for financial gain and illegal re-entry after deportation. If found guilty on all counts, Son-Gonzalez could face up to 12 years in federal prison.

The indictment alleges that in February 2025, Son-Gonzalez transported an alien while knowing and recklessly disregarding the fact that the individual had entered and remained in the United States unlawfully. Additionally, it claims that Son-Gonzalez was discovered to be unlawfully present in the U.S. following his removal in June 2024.

It is important to note that an indictment is merely a formal charge indicating potential violations of federal criminal law. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The case was investigated by the United States Customs and Border Patrol and will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kelli Swaney.
