National Farmers Union President Rob Larew has voiced concerns over the recent decision by the President to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. According to Larew, these measures will significantly impact American agriculture.
"The tariffs announced today, along with retaliatory measures from China and Canada, will have serious consequences for American agriculture," Larew stated. He emphasized the critical role farmers play in the nation and called for trade policies that allow them to compete fairly without becoming embroiled in international conflicts.
Larew highlighted the current economic challenges facing farmers and expressed concern that the new tariffs would exacerbate these issues. "We are already facing significant economic uncertainty, and these actions only add to the strain," he noted. He stressed the importance of trade policies that offer concrete protections for those directly affected.
While there is talk of a strategic plan, Larew insists on seeing its implementation. "Promises alone won’t pay the bills or keep farms afloat," he remarked. He warned that without a clear strategy, family farmers might once again bear undue burdens from decisions outside their control—a situation that could eventually affect consumers as well.
Larew urged collaboration between the administration and trading partners to mitigate further harm to rural communities. "We urge the administration to work with our trading partners to prevent further harm to rural communities," he concluded.
