A Thibodaux social worker has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for healthcare fraud. John Christopher Barrilleaux, aged 64, was sentenced on February 27, 2025, after pleading guilty to charges of healthcare fraud under the violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1347.
Court documents reveal that from 2008 through 2024, Barrilleaux submitted false claims to private insurance companies for millions of dollars in services that were never provided. To support these fraudulent claims, he created fake patient notes and submitted them to the insurance companies.
United States District Judge Barry Ashe handed down the sentence which includes a three-year period of supervised release following his prison term. Barrilleaux is also required to pay $4,592,650 in restitution to the victim companies and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their work in investigating this case. The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Nicholas D. Moses from the Financial Crimes Unit and Health Care Fraud Coordinator, along with Trial Attorney Kelly Z. Walters from the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division’s Fraud Section.
