A Salvadoran national, Jose Humberto Caceres-Martinez, has been indicted on charges of illegal reentry into the United States. Acting United States Attorney Sara C. Sweeney announced the indictment, which accuses the 25-year-old from El Salvador of returning to the U.S. after being previously deported. If convicted, Caceres-Martinez could face up to two years in federal prison.
Court documents reveal that Caceres-Martinez was deported on August 20, 2019. However, he was discovered in the U.S. again on February 17, 2025, following an alleged vehicular accident in Brevard County. It is reported that he did not have permission from either the Attorney General or the Secretary of Homeland Security to reapply for admission into the country.
It is important to note that an indictment serves as a formal charge and does not imply guilt. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kaley Austin-Aronson.
