Edward Keith Perkins, a 31-year-old from Detroit, Michigan, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release for attempting to possess methamphetamine with the intent to distribute. The sentencing was announced in Charleston, West Virginia.
Court documents reveal that on August 19, 2024, Perkins shipped approximately 4.43 kilograms of methamphetamine from California to an address on Virginia Street in Charleston. On August 22, he arrived at the location where law enforcement observed a passenger retrieve the package and place it in the vehicle's trunk. When officers approached, Perkins fled but was later captured. He admitted that the package also contained about 50 grams of fentanyl along with the methamphetamine.
Perkins has a criminal history including convictions for assault, carjacking, and carrying a concealed weapon.
Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston stated: “The investigation in this case revealed that the defendant distributed nearly 20 pounds of methamphetamine and over 100 grams of fentanyl that he shipped from California to West Virginia and Tennessee.” She added that "today’s sentence is the result of this office’s commitment to work closely with our law enforcement partners and prosecute these cases to the fullest extent to keep our communities safe."
The investigative efforts were led by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security-Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team (MDENT), which includes several local police departments.
United States District Judge Joseph R. Goodwin delivered the sentence. The prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorneys JC MacCallum and Alexander A. Redmon.
