Trump administration's PCLOB member dismissals spark legal battle

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The Trump Administration recently made a controversial decision to dismiss three Democratic members of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB). This independent agency is tasked with ensuring transparency and accountability in U.S. surveillance practices. The removal included the Chair, leaving the board without a quorum and unable to function effectively. With only one member remaining, it could take months for new appointments, rendering the agency non-operational for now.

On February 24th, two of the dismissed members initiated a lawsuit in federal court, arguing that their dismissal was illegal.

In a recent episode of CDT's podcast "Tech Talks," Greg Nojeim, Senior Counsel and Director of CDT’s Security and Surveillance Project, discussed the implications of these actions by the Trump Administration. He explored the legal challenges ahead and what this situation means for privacy and trans-Atlantic data flows.
