A man in the United States illegally has been charged with high-speed evasion from an immigration checkpoint and conspiracy to transport illegal aliens. The charges were filed in federal court.
Court documents reveal that on March 2, 2025, Roberto Rodrigo Velazquez-Lopez allegedly drove a sedan with Texas license plates through a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 25 in Doña Ana County, New Mexico. Despite commands from agents to stop, Velazquez-Lopez continued northbound at speeds reaching approximately 110 miles per hour before stopping near mile marker 40.
Upon his arrest, Velazquez-Lopez admitted to being illegally present in the United States and disclosed that two individuals were hidden in the trunk of the vehicle. In total, four illegal aliens were found inside the car.
During a post-Miranda interview, Velazquez-Lopez claimed he was instructed to transport illegal aliens from El Paso, Texas to Albuquerque, New Mexico as a means to settle a debt. He also confessed to having transported illegal aliens on four previous occasions.
The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Holland S. Kastrin and Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar of the U.S. Border Patrol El Paso Sector.
The case is under investigation by the U.S. Border Patrol and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jackson Dering.
It is important to note that a criminal complaint is merely an allegation and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
