U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Campo Station intercepted a significant methamphetamine smuggling attempt on Sunday night, seizing 198 pounds of the drug. The incident occurred at approximately 8:51 p.m. when agents stopped a truck traveling westbound on Interstate 8 at the Campo Border Patrol Checkpoint.

Following a brief interview with the driver, agents called in a Border Patrol K-9 unit to assist with the inspection. The K-9 alerted officers to the potential presence of narcotics inside the vehicle. Upon searching, agents discovered packages hidden in an aftermarket compartment within the truck's bed. A total of 35 foil-wrapped packages were found and later tested positive for methamphetamine, weighing 198.33 pounds with an estimated street value of $436,300.

The driver was handed over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for federal prosecution, and Border Patrol seized the truck.

"The U.S. Border Patrol is a 24/7 law enforcement agency focused on protecting our homeland," stated San Diego Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey D. Stalnaker. "The actions that Border Patrol agents take to keep these deadly drugs off our streets save lives throughout the U.S."

In this fiscal year alone, San Diego Sector agents have confiscated substantial quantities of illegal substances including cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl.
