The United States government has announced the establishment of the White House Task Force on the FIFA World Cup 2026. This initiative comes as the nation prepares to host what is anticipated to be the largest sporting event in history, coinciding with America's 250th anniversary.
President Biden will chair this task force, with Vice President Harris serving as vice chair. An Executive Director will oversee daily operations and report directly to the President through strategic channels. The task force's responsibilities include coordinating efforts across various government departments to ensure successful planning and execution of both the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and FIFA World Cup 2026.
Members of this task force will include key figures from several departments such as State, Treasury, Defense, Commerce, Transportation, and Homeland Security. Additionally, other significant roles within the administration will participate, including national security advisors and heads of federal agencies like the FBI.
"The United States is a host nation for the FIFA World Cup 2026," states President Biden's order. "This important event... presents an opportunity to showcase the Nation’s pride and hospitality while promoting economic growth and tourism through sport."
To facilitate its mission, the task force will operate under the Department of Homeland Security for administrative purposes. It is expected that each agency involved will submit reports detailing their preparations by June 1, 2025.
The task force is scheduled to disband on December 31, 2026 unless extended by presidential order. The executive order clarifies that it does not alter existing legal authorities or create enforceable rights against any part of the U.S. government.
