The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has issued warnings to 60 universities across the United States regarding potential enforcement actions if they fail to meet their obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. This act mandates protection for Jewish students on campuses, ensuring their uninterrupted access to facilities and educational opportunities.
Secretary of Education Linda McMahon expressed concern over ongoing antisemitic incidents at these institutions. She stated, "The Department is deeply disappointed that Jewish students studying on elite U.S. campuses continue to fear for their safety amid the relentless antisemitic eruptions that have severely disrupted campus life for more than a year. University leaders must do better." McMahon emphasized that public investment in these universities is contingent upon strict adherence to federal antidiscrimination laws.
Among the universities receiving letters are prominent names such as Harvard University, Stanford University, Yale University, and Columbia University. These institutions are part of a broader investigation by OCR into violations related to antisemitic harassment and discrimination.
The OCR's action is grounded in its authority under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, and national origin at federally funded institutions. National origin includes shared ancestry, such as Jewish heritage.
This initiative aligns with President Trump's Executive Order "Additional Measures to Combat Antisemitism," prompting directed investigations into five universities with reported widespread antisemitic harassment. An additional 55 schools are being monitored or investigated following complaints filed with OCR.
Recently, a significant development saw $400 million in federal grants and contracts canceled for Columbia University due to inadequate measures against discrimination towards Jewish students. The Department also announced an immediate focus on resolving outstanding complaints about antisemitic violence and harassment.
