The United States has extended its congratulations to Surinamese Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin following his election as the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the 2025-2030 term. The U.S. expressed its eagerness to collaborate with Secretary General-elect Ramdin in maintaining the OAS’s mission, which includes defending democracy, promoting human rights, and enhancing security and economic prosperity across the hemisphere.
The U.S. views a stable and secure hemisphere as crucial to advancing priorities that aim to make America safer and more prosperous. This involves strengthening alliances with democratic partners to address regional challenges such as illegal migration, transnational crime, and authoritarian regimes in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. These issues pose threats to both national security interests and economic stability. In response, there will be advocacy for institutional reforms within the OAS to improve its efficiency and effectiveness.
Additionally, financial sustainability is highlighted as a shared responsibility among all member states of the OAS.
Acknowledgment was given to outgoing Secretary General Luis Almagro for his leadership in defending democracy during his tenure. He was recognized for confronting undemocratic influences in countries like Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba. The OAS is urged to continue its commitment to promoting free elections and safeguarding fundamental freedoms as per its founding charter.
