Council Bluffs man receives eight-year sentence for firearm possession

A Council Bluffs man has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison for firearm possession as a felon. Jesus Everardo Medina, aged 40, was found with a loaded, stolen pistol in his waistband in July 2024. This follows a previous conviction in 2018 for being a felon in possession of a firearm, after which he completed his supervised release term in December 2022.

Following his imprisonment, Medina will undergo a three-year supervised release period. The federal system does not allow parole.

The announcement was made by United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) along with the Council Bluffs Police Department.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement and communities. Launched on May 26, 2021, the strategy focuses on building community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
