Parkersburg man receives over 12 years for firearm offense

Michael McHenry, a 23-year-old resident of Parkersburg, West Virginia, has been sentenced to 155 months in federal prison for unlawful possession of a firearm. The sentence was announced in Clarksburg, West Virginia.

Court documents and statements reveal that McHenry is prohibited from possessing firearms due to a grand larceny conviction in Wood County. He and Garrett DeBerry carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint and led police on a high-speed chase through Monongalia County. During the incident, McHenry used a 9mm pistol.

Following his prison term, McHenry will be under supervised release for three years.

Garrett DeBerry, aged 26 from Morgantown, West Virginia, pleaded guilty in June 2024 to unlawful possession of a firearm. His prohibition stems from an earlier firearms conviction in Monongalia County. DeBerry's sentencing is scheduled for May 2025.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Cogar is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office.

The proceedings were overseen by Chief U.S. District Judge Thomas S. Kleeh.
