United States Attorney David Metcalf has announced the arrest and indictment of Tyheem Tyler, 34, from Philadelphia. Tyler faces charges including conspiracy to commit kidnapping, kidnapping resulting in death, and aiding and abetting.
According to the indictment, on March 6, 2023, Tyler allegedly participated in a robbery at gunpoint targeting Wey Um at his business location in Philadelphia. The indictment further claims that on March 31, 2023, Tyler and accomplices used a Ford Explorer SUV to kidnap Wey Um from outside his home. They reportedly transported him to an area near the Delaware River in Philadelphia around 2:12 a.m.
The allegations state that Tyler unlawfully seized and held Wey Um for ransom or reward, leading to his death. The offense involved using means of interstate commerce.
If found guilty, Tyler could face life imprisonment or the death penalty.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force and the Philadelphia Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Everett Witherell and Timothy Lanni.
It is important to note that an indictment is merely an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
