ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested a 29-year-old Brazilian national in Waltham, Massachusetts. The individual was convicted of manslaughter in Brazil related to a motor vehicle incident but failed to serve his prison sentence.

"This Brazilian fugitive attempted to flee justice in his home country by hiding out in Massachusetts," stated Patricia H. Hyde, acting Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston. "He presented a threat to the residents of our communities that we will not tolerate. ICE will not allow our New England communities to become a safe haven for the world’s bad actors. We will continue to arrest and remove them from our streets."

The Brazilian court sentenced him on December 11, 2018, to four years, eight months, and 21 days in prison for the offense. He was initially apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol on November 22, 2018, after entering the United States illegally near Hidalgo, Texas. Following this arrest, he was issued an expedited removal order but released on his own recognizance.

Currently, the Brazilian national remains in ICE custody after his recent arrest.

The public is encouraged to report any crimes or suspicious activities by contacting the ICE Tip Line at 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or using the online tip form.
