Brian Alexis Patron Lopez was found guilty by a federal jury in San Diego for his involvement in the kidnapping, torture, and murder of an 18-year-old U.S. citizen, identified as M.A.R. The victim's death was reportedly a consequence of a dispute over a stolen methamphetamine shipment intended for smuggling into the United States.
The jury reached their verdict after deliberating for less than a day following a seven-day trial. Patron faced charges including Intentional Killing While Engaged in Drug Trafficking, Hostage Taking Resulting in Death, and Conspiracy to Commit Hostage Taking Resulting in Death.
"This is a heartbreaking tragedy, where a young man lost his life, leaving his family shattered," stated Acting U.S. Attorney Andrew Haden. He emphasized the relentless commitment of the United States to ensuring citizen safety globally and credited FBI San Diego and Mexican authorities for their role in achieving justice.
San Diego FBI Special Agent in Charge Stacey Moy commented on the outcome: "Today’s verdict is an impactful outcome to a ruthless, vicious, and violent hostage taking and murder, and brings justice to the victim’s family." Moy affirmed that FBI San Diego remains dedicated to combating drug cartels and related violence threatening American safety.
Patron's sentencing is scheduled for July 7, 2025, before U.S. District Judge William Q. Hayes.
The victim was abducted from Tijuana on May 29, 2020. Following severe beatings and torture while ransom demands were made to his family, he was ultimately killed on May 30. His body was discovered six days later on a hillside.
Evidence presented at trial showed that Patron participated actively in the crime by removing M.A.R. from his hotel room with accomplices who physically assaulted him before transporting him away in a car. They continued torturing M.A.R., demanding between $2,000-$3,000 or methamphetamine for his release.
On May 30 evening, after moving him through various locations including motels and an apartment, they took M.A.R. to a remote hillside where Patron fatally shot him despite ongoing ransom negotiations with the family.
The prosecution team included Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mario Peia and Alexandra F. Foster who presented substantial evidence such as Facebook messages linking Patron to co-conspirators about the crime plan along with surveillance footage capturing parts of the abduction process.
Patron faces severe penalties under charges including Intentional Killing While Engaged in Drug Trafficking (maximum life imprisonment), Hostage Taking Resulting in Death (mandatory life imprisonment), and Conspiracy related offenses carrying similar penalties.
