U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Port of Buffalo have arrested a Ukrainian citizen wanted for attempted murder in Florida. The arrest occurred after the individual was denied entry into Canada.
The man, identified as 48-year-old Ruslan Anatoliyovych Chernotkach, was flagged during a primary inspection when the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) revealed an active felony arrest warrant from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Orlando, Florida. Chernotkach is accused of attempted murder.
Following this discovery, CBP officers detained Chernotkach and conducted further investigations in a secondary examination area. They confirmed his identity and verified the outstanding warrant with the Orange County authorities.
Buffalo Port Director Gaetano Cordone praised the officers' efforts, stating, "Our CBP officers continue to perform outstanding work, diligently screening all travelers entering the country including identifying and arresting wanted fugitives." He emphasized their commitment to collaborating with law enforcement partners to apprehend individuals accused of serious crimes.
After processing by CBP officers, Chernotkach was handed over to the Buffalo Police Department. He is currently held by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office as a fugitive from justice and awaits extradition proceedings.
