CBP launches app allowing travelers early access to provisional I-94

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has introduced a new mobile application, CBP Home, designed to simplify the process of obtaining a provisional I-94 for travelers entering the United States through land border crossings. The app allows travelers to apply for their I-94 before arriving at the border, potentially reducing processing times and expediting entry.

The I-94 form is essential for foreign visitors entering the U.S., except U.S. citizens, returning foreign visitors with immigrant visas, and most Canadian citizens visiting or transiting through the country. It serves as a record of arrival and departure and can be used by foreign visitors to adjust their status or extend their stay in the U.S., provided they leave by the indicated departure date. The form is also necessary for those needing to prove legal visitor status to employers, educational institutions, or government agencies.

To minimize wait times at ports of entry, CBP advises travelers to apply online for a provisional I-94 permit before arrival. Applications can be submitted via the CBP Home app or the CBP I-94 website. Travelers must present themselves for inspection within seven days after submitting their application; otherwise, the provisional I-94 will expire.

The CBP Home app is available for free download from both the Apple App Store and Google Play. The cost of applying online remains $6, equivalent to an in-person application fee. By using this app, travelers can complete their applications ahead of time, save time at entry points, easily access their I-94 information via mobile devices, avoid paperwork hassles, and streamline travel preparations.

Travelers requiring an I-94 permit must be physically present during the application process. This requirement includes those who have obtained provisional permits online. Applicants must demonstrate financial solvency and proof of residency outside the U.S., along with sufficient ties to their home country that they do not intend to abandon.

For individuals from Visa Waiver Program countries, while an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is not mandatory for entering via land borders, it is required when applying for an I-94 using CBP Home. Travelers from these countries are encouraged by CBP to obtain an ESTA so they can utilize either CBP Home or the website without needing to fill out Form I-94W upon arrival.
