Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Calexico Cargo Facility recently seized over 1,300 pounds of methamphetamine in two separate incidents. The discoveries involved liquid methamphetamine concealed in a tractor-trailer's fuel tank and bulk methamphetamine hidden in duffle bags.

The first seizure occurred on March 12 when CBP officers stopped a 36-year-old man driving a red tractor-trailer from Mexico. After initial checks, the vehicle was moved to a secondary inspection area for further examination. Officers used non-intrusive technology to scan the vehicle and found irregularities in the fuel tank. A CBP K-9 unit confirmed the presence of narcotics, leading to the extraction of 962.31 pounds of diesel fuel that tested positive for methamphetamine.

On March 13, another incident took place involving a 30-year-old man driving a black tractor-trailer from Mexico. Similar procedures led officers to inspect the vehicle's cab, where they found seven duffle bags containing 140 packages with a total weight of 704.94 pounds. Tests confirmed these also contained methamphetamine.

“These seizures of methamphetamine and liquid methamphetamine at our cargo facility highlight the relentless efforts of our CBP officers in stopping dangerous drugs from entering our communities,” stated Roque Caza, Calexico Area Port Director. “Smugglers continue to adapt their methods, but our officers’ vigilance, expertise, and use of advanced technology allow us to stay ahead. This interception is a testament to our commitment to securing the border and protecting the public from the devastating effects of illicit narcotics.”

Both drivers were handed over to Homeland Security Investigations for further processing while CBP seized both vehicles and narcotics.

CBP emphasizes its ongoing efforts to enhance enforcement strategies using advanced screening technology, K-9 teams, and officer expertise to combat evolving smuggling tactics.
