The University of Maine System (UMaine) has affirmed its compliance with Title IX regulations following a review by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This move aligns with President Donald J. Trump's Executive Order, which aims to protect equal opportunities for women and girls in sports.
The USDA, which provides significant federal funding to entities in Maine, including UMaine, began an investigation last month to evaluate the university's adherence to Title IX and the Executive Order. Concerns had been raised about Maine's compliance with these requirements.
By February 26, 2025, UMaine addressed USDA's inquiries by confirming that it does not allow male students to participate in women's sports. Specifically, UMaine stated that it:
- Does not permit male student-athletes to identify as female student-athletes for eligibility in NCAA-sanctioned women's sports.
- Does not allow males to engage in individual or team contact sports with females.
- Complies with NCAA regulations prohibiting male participation in NCAA-sanctioned women's sports.
Since confirming its compliance on February 26, 2025, UMaine has continued to receive federal funds from the USDA. The decision underscores the importance of protecting equal opportunities for women under federal law.
President Trump remains committed to ensuring that federally funded institutions adhere to Title IX and other relevant laws. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will maintain its enforcement efforts to protect female athletes and hold institutions accountable.
