Julian Jared Gill, a 34-year-old resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, received a prison sentence of 111 months for gun possession and assaulting two Deputy U.S. Marshals. This was announced by Russ Ferguson, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.
The announcement was made in conjunction with Bennie Mims from the ATF's Charlotte Field Division, Terry J. Burgin from the USMS for the Western District of North Carolina, and Chief Johnny Jennings of CMPD.
Court documents reveal that Gill was arrested in 2022 by CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team while possessing a loaded Glock pistol with a high-capacity magazine. As Gill is prohibited from owning firearms, he attempted to hide the weapon in his hotel room toilet tank before surrendering.
Gill faced federal indictment and during a court appearance in 2023 related to this firearm possession charge, he reacted violently to a judge's decision. After leaving the courtroom and entering holding cell blocks, he assaulted two Deputy U.S. Marshals and resisted lawful orders.
On February 28, 2024, Gill pleaded guilty to charges of firearm possession by a felon and felony assault on federal officers. His criminal record includes multiple convictions since 2007. At sentencing, District Court Judge Michael F. Urbanski handed down consecutive sentences totaling 111 months—70 months for firearm possession and 41 months for assaulting law enforcement officers.
“Attacks on our law enforcement officers cannot be tolerated, and I hope the extra time sentenced is a warning to others,” stated U.S. Attorney Ferguson.
