Doug Burgum, Secretary of the Interior, said that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is working "to save taxpayer dollars and help balance the federal budget." Burgum made this statement in a March 28 post on X, following an interview featuring Elon Musk and the DOGE team on Fox News.
"Tyler and the @Interior @DOGE team work tirelessly every day (including weekends!) to save taxpayer dollars and help balance the federal budget so we can pay down the national debt," said Burgum. "They're individually reviewing 36,000+ Interior grants and contracts and have identified massive amounts of waste, fraud, and abuse already!"
According to Musk and his team, their mission is to combat government waste, fraud, and abuse. They addressed critics by explaining how they are leveraging technology to enhance accountability and transparency in government operations. Musk emphasized the importance of innovation in addressing systemic issues and expressed that his team's efforts aim to bring about real, tangible change.

We are now reviewing every single contract, every single grant, and when things come to my attention that don't make sense, I'm bringing them to Secretary Burgum."
DOGE has identified several instances of wasteful spending within federal agencies. According to Business Insider, DOGE uncovered that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) spent $59 million to house illegal immigrants in luxury New York City hotels.
