Michele Beckwith Acting U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California
Miguel Obed Romero Reyes has pleaded guilty to trafficking fentanyl, as confirmed by Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith. The 25-year-old from Sinaloa, Mexico, was apprehended in Fresno County while transporting over 200,000 fentanyl pills in his vehicle. Court documents reveal that law enforcement officers discovered a duffel bag containing 48 pounds (21.8 kilograms) of blue counterfeit M-30 pills packed in 20 one-gallon Ziploc bags during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 5.
Romero Reyes had collected the pills from Arizona and was en route to Washington state for distribution. This case is part of a collaborative effort by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cody S. Chapple is in charge of prosecuting the case.
A sentencing hearing is set for June 30, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Kirk E. Sherriff. Romero Reyes could face a mandatory minimum of 10 years to life in prison. The specific sentence will depend on the court's evaluation of various factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
