Felon sentenced for shotgun possession in Rotterdam

Jesse Taber, a 46-year-old resident of Rotterdam, New York, was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for unlawfully possessing a shotgun, according to an announcement by United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III and Bryan Miller, Special Agent in Charge of the New York Field Division of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

Taber previously pleaded guilty to having a 12-gauge Stoeger Coach Gun shotgun in his residence on December 26, 2023. He also acknowledged having three prior felony convictions in New York, which legally prohibited him from possessing firearms.

The sentencing was delivered by United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino, who also ordered a three-year term of supervised release following Taber's prison term. The ATF led the investigation with aid from the Rotterdam Police Department, and the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Belliss.

The arrest and sentencing are part of efforts under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative of the Department of Justice aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration among law enforcement and community groups. The program targets violent offenders and supports prevention and reentry strategies.
