Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson has confirmed that Julius Augillard, a 39-year-old resident of New Orleans, has been sentenced to seventy months in prison. Following his imprisonment, Augillard will undergo three years of supervised release. This sentence follows his guilty plea on two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, a breach of Title 18 of the United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(8).
Court documents detail that on February 20, 2023, Augillard was in possession of a firearm on Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras. Louisiana State Troopers pursued Augillard, who attempted to escape on foot. He was apprehended with a Smith and Wesson Model SD40VE, .40 caliber pistol on his person. Later that year, on December 31, Augillard was found with an International Model PT609 PRO, nine-millimeter semi-automatic pistol while trespassing near Tremé Street. The Housing Authority of New Orleans officers took him into custody.
Simpson commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New Orleans Police Department, and the Louisiana State Police for their roles in this case. Assistant United States Attorney Paul J. Hubbell managed the prosecution.
This sentencing is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, an initiative to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The program aims to enhance safety by fostering trust, supporting prevention efforts, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating the impact of these measures.
