Fentanyl seizure leads to federal charges in Sandy Springs

Antwuan Brown, a 39-year-old resident of Alpharetta, Georgia, appeared in court to face charges of possessing fentanyl with the intent to distribute. The charges are linked to what is reported as the largest fentanyl seizure in the district to date. Authorities reportedly seized about 240,000 fentanyl pills and 4.5 kilograms of fentanyl powder.

Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie, Jr., emphasized the role of law enforcement in the operation, stating, "Our federal and local law enforcement partners undoubtedly saved countless lives through their diligent investigation and seizure of this immense quantity of deadly fentanyl." Moultrie reassured that the office will "continue to work with our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to aggressively target alleged fentanyl dealers."

Jae W. Chung, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Atlanta Division, addressed the broader implications of the fentanyl crisis, stating, "DEA will continue to combat the fentanyl crisis by holding the most dangerous and prolific drug traffickers accountable. Locking away criminal drug dealers who choose to push poison on our streets will save lives as fentanyl is the number one killer among Americans aged 18-45."

The Sandy Springs Police Department commented on the local efforts to combat illegal drugs, affirming their commitment to reducing the impact of drugs like fentanyl in the community. "We work closely with our federal law enforcement partners, such as the DEA/HIDTA to strengthen our efforts," a representative stated.

Details presented in court reveal that on March 21, 2025, federal investigators executed search warrants at an apartment and vehicle in Sandy Springs. In the apartment, they discovered a pill press with fentanyl powder and two firearms. Antwuan Brown was found with the key to the vehicle, which, when opened, contained the fentanyl pills, fentanyl powder, cocaine, and methamphetamine. Brown was arrested on the scene.

The public is reminded that Brown's charges are pending, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Sandy Springs Police Department are investigating this case, being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Matthew R. LaGrone.

This case falls under Operation Take Back America, an initiative using extensive resources from the Department of Justice to tackle illegal immigration, eliminate cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect communities from violent crime.
