Americans have shown compassion through organ donations, with over 170 million registered as donors. During National Donate Life Month, these individuals are recognized for their contributions. Last year, organ donations and transplantations positively impacted nearly 50,000 lives.
Each organ donor can potentially save eight lives and improve the condition of 75 individuals suffering from chronic diseases, blindness, severe burns, and trauma. Currently, more than 103,000 people are on the national transplant waiting list, with a new name added every eight minutes. Sadly, 17 people die each day waiting for a transplant, underscoring the dire need for more donors.
Eligibility for organ donation is broad. Individuals of any age or medical background can register as donors through their State registry, Department of Motor Vehicles, or online at www.organdonor.gov. The process involves simply checking a box or signing up online.
This month, there is an acknowledgment of those who donate and a celebration of the recipients. "The First Lady and I pray for all who await a transplant with anticipation and hope," states the President.
President Donald J. Trump has proclaimed April 2025 as National Donate Life Month, advocating for all Americans to consider becoming organ donors and discussing this choice with family and friends.
