Guatemalan citizen sentenced for illegal reentry into the United States

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania has announced the sentencing of Oseas Froilan Gomez-Tebalan, a 30-year-old Guatemalan citizen, to 21 months in prison. The sentencing was delivered by United States District Judge Jennifer P. Wilson for the crime of illegally reentering the United States.

Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus revealed that Gomez-Tebalan had been removed from the United States on March 18, 2017, after a conviction in California for assault with a deadly weapon. Despite his removal, Gomez-Tebalan was discovered in the U.S. again without the necessary legal permission to return.

This sentencing is part of Operation Take Back America, which uses the resources of the Department of Justice to address illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect communities from violent crimes. The operation enhances efforts from the Project Safe Neighborhood initiative.

The investigation was conducted by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations, with Assistant United States Attorney K. Wesley Mishoe prosecuting the case.
