A drug trafficking ring involving individuals from Casper, Wyoming, and a source from Thornton, Colorado, has concluded with all parties sentenced. The case centered on the distribution of methamphetamine between these regions.

William J. Varney, a resident of Casper, was sentenced to 235 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute. Varney pleaded guilty on December 23, 2024, with U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson delivering the sentence on March 14 in Cheyenne.

Jolyn K. Furley from Thornton received a 168-month prison sentence and five years of supervised release after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. Judge Alan B. Johnson also sentenced Furley on March 28 in Cheyenne.

Julia Carlene Deshaw, another Casper resident, was sentenced to 120 months in prison with five years of supervised release for her role in conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute, aiding and abetting. Her sentence was handed down by Judge Johnson on March 14.

Gerald Dehnert, also from Casper, received a 97-month prison sentence and five years of supervised release for similar charges of conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute, and aiding and abetting. Having pleaded guilty on January 8, his sentence was finalized by Judge Johnson on April 1.

Court documents revealed that between August and September of 2023, Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation agents suspected Deshaw and Varney of distributing methamphetamine in Natrona County. Investigations showed Deshaw, Varney, and Dehnert made frequent trips to Colorado to obtain methamphetamine for redistribution. Jolyn Furley was identified as the supplier.

The investigation was carried out by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, Wyoming Highway Patrol, and Mills Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Z. Seth Griswold prosecuting the case.
