Boston man sentenced for possession of firearm and ammunition as a felon

Tyrone Goforth, a 44-year-old Boston resident, received a sentence today in federal court for illegal possession of a firearm. U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin sentenced Goforth to time served, totaling 66 months and one day, followed by three years of supervised release, after he pleaded guilty in February 2025 to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Goforth had been indicted by a federal grand jury in October 2020.

The incident prompting his arrest occurred on July 31, 2020, when officers responded to a call reporting an individual with a gun at a Roxbury bookstore. Goforth, who met the given description, was found with a loaded Sig Sauer P938 9mm semi-automatic pistol. As a result of a 2000 conviction in Suffolk Superior Court, he is legally prohibited from possessing firearms.

The case was announced by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley, James M. Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Boston Field Division, and Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox. Assistant U.S. Attorney John T. Dawley from the Organized Crime and Gang Unit prosecuted the case.

This proceeding is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing gun violence and other violent crimes through cooperation among law enforcement and community organizations. The Department of Justice reinforced its violent crime reduction strategy under PSN on May 26, 2021, focusing on building trust within communities, supporting violence-preventing organizations, establishing enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.
