U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced a new initiative to improve the efficiency of international travel while enhancing security measures. The International Remote Baggage Screening (IRBS) process enables passengers arriving in the United States from international locations to proceed to their connecting flights without needing to re-check their luggage, unless directed by CBP for additional inspection. This development aims to minimize wait times and offer a better travel experience.

Through this initiative, CBP personnel can remotely access x-ray images of checked baggage taken at foreign airports before the aircraft's arrival in the U.S. This allows for a more proactive assessment of security risks and an expedited handling of arriving flights. The IRBS does not alter the existing Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening procedures for checked luggage.

CBP is collaborating with American Airlines on a daily flight route from Sydney International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport, with plans to implement the initiative from April 9, 2025. Future expansions are anticipated, covering additional routes and airlines. This effort reflects CBP’s commitment to enhancing security protocols and easing the passage of international travelers through selected U.S. Points of Entry.

Diane J. Sabatino, Acting Executive Assistant Commissioner Office of Field Operations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, stated, “As part of our innovation efforts in air travel, CBP is leveraging technology to enhance baggage inspections to further secure and streamline travel. The International Remote Baggage Screening initiative is a significant step forward in modernizing our processes and providing a secure and seamless experience for international travelers.”

Ensuring the secure and efficient processing of U.S. citizens, trusted travelers, and international visitors is vital for the economic and national security of the country. The effectiveness of these protocols goes beyond facility improvements and personnel. The IRBS is integrated into CBP's Airport Modernization plan, aiming to bolster security and traveler experience through advanced technology at the CBP Federal Inspection Stations.

CBP, the largest law enforcement organization and the first unified border management agency globally, comprises over 65,000 members. Their responsibility includes safeguarding the country on multiple fronts—land, air, and sea. CBP supports safe, legal travel and trade to sustain the nation's economic growth, enhancing security through innovative and cooperative efforts.
