Michael David Brown, a 44-year-old from Myrtle Beach, has admitted guilt for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
Law enforcement reported that on January 10, 2024, officers from the Myrtle Beach Police Department discovered a man slumped over behind the wheel of a vehicle in a motel parking lot. Upon investigation, they determined the individual was intoxicated. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded handgun on the passenger seat.
Brown, with prior convictions for domestic violence and assault and battery, is legally barred from owning firearms. His plea subjects him to a possible maximum prison sentence of 15 years in federal custody, alongside potential fines, restitution, and post-imprisonment supervision. United States District Judge Joseph Dawson, III accepted the guilty plea, with sentencing to occur following a review of a report from the U.S. Probation Office.
This case is connected to Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The initiative, launched on May 26, 2021, focuses on building community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement goals, and measuring effectiveness.
The investigation involved the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Fifteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office, and the Myrtle Beach Police Department. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Hixson is leading the prosecution.
