Ohio man admits to illegal firearm possession, faces 15 years

Jakob Barnes, a 39-year-old resident of Wheeling, West Virginia, has admitted to unlawfully possessing a firearm. Court documents reveal that Barnes, due to a previous felony conviction, is prohibited from owning firearms.

The discovery was made during a drug-related robbery investigation. Authorities obtained a search warrant for Barnes' apartment on Wheeling Island, where they found two firearms and ammunition.

Barnes could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison. A federal district court judge will make a sentencing decision, taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and various statutory factors.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David Perri. The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Wheeling Police Department.

U.S. Magistrate Judge James P. Mazzone was involved in the proceedings.
