Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa
A man from Dubuque, Iowa, has been sentenced to federal prison for discharging a firearm in a residential area, following his guilty plea for possession of a firearm by a felon. Datreon Adams, 30, received a three-year federal prison sentence on April 8, 2025. His plea was entered on September 19, 2024, following his arrest after the incident in April 2024, where he unlawfully possessed a firearm.
During the plea and sentencing hearings, Adams admitted to possessing the firearm unlawfully. It was revealed that he drove through a neighborhood in Dubuque firing the weapon before returning to his motel. There, officers located the gun and confirmed he was a felon. No individuals or property were harmed during the incident.
United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced Adams in Cedar Rapids to 36 months in prison. Following his term, Adams will have a two-year period of supervised release. The federal system does not allow for parole.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at bringing various levels of law enforcement together to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The Department of Justice reinforced the initiative with a crime reduction strategy launched on May 26, 2021. This strategy focuses on community trust, support for community-based violence prevention programs, and strategic enforcement priorities.
Adams remains in the custody of the United States Marshal until his transfer to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Michael S.A. Hudson. The investigation involved the Dubuque Police Department, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
