U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Chicago intercepted 71 shipments of dangerous chemicals between March 16 and 22, 2025. This operation involved five ports of entry and two international airports.
The effort focused on identifying suspect precursor chemical shipments in mail, express consignment, and air cargo environments. The CBP Office of Field Operations (OFO) reported a noticeable rise in precursor chemical seizures over the past six months. In fiscal year 2025, between October and December 2024, there were 151 such seizures, exceeding the 132 seizures recorded throughout the previous fiscal year.
Throughout the operation, Chicago CBP seized 67 shipments containing human growth hormones and steroids, 3 shipments of precursor chemicals, and 1 shipment of 4-Butanediol. Many of the shipments came from Hong Kong, intended for various U.S. cities, and involved smuggling through a master carton scheme.
LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, Director of Field Operations for the Chicago Field Office, acknowledged the officers' efforts: "The work of our officers has been incredible and their dedication to CBP's enforcement mission is evident when you look at these seizures." She added that through their vigilance and hard work, CBP remains committed to intercepting illicit substances at entry points before they can harm communities.
The operation also took place at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Port of Memphis, Port of Louisville, Port of Indianapolis, and Port of Cincinnati.
CBP officers from the Office of Field Operations lead the border security mission at 328 ports of entry. Updates from Chicago CBP can be followed @CBPChicago and @DFOChicago on X, and more information is available on CBP’s YouTube channel.
