Kentucky lawmakers criticize Trump's new tariffs citing economic concerns

Several Kentucky lawmakers have voiced concerns over President Donald Trump's recent tariff decisions. On Saturday, Trump signed executive orders imposing a 25% tariff on Mexican and most Canadian imports and a 10% tariff on goods from China, effective Tuesday. However, an agreement with Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has paused the Mexican tariffs for one month.

Senator Mitch McConnell warned that "it will drive the cost of everything up," affecting American consumers. Senator Rand Paul criticized the tariffs as taxes that would lead to higher prices and less trade, stating, "Tariff lovers will be forced to explain the persistence of high prices."

Governor Andy Beshear urged Kentucky's federal delegation to oppose the tariffs, highlighting retaliatory actions against Kentucky bourbon. He noted these measures could be "costly, disruptive, and harmful" to many workers in Kentucky.

Representative Morgan McGarvey also expressed concern about the impact on Kentucky's bourbon industry and agriculture. He described the tariffs as "petty, shortsighted, and incredibly harmful," emphasizing their potential damage to American consumers and workers.
