FTC opens inquiry into impact of federal rules on market competition

Today, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) initiated a public inquiry into how federal regulations impact competition. The effort aims to identify and reduce barriers that prevent market competition, responding to President Trump's Executive Order on Reducing Anticompetitive Regulatory Barriers.

According to the Executive Order, the FTC, under the Trump administration, will be at the forefront of promoting the President's agenda to rejuvenate the U.S. economy by eliminating regulations that stifle competition. Andrew N. Ferguson, FTC Chairman, stated, "Regulations that reduce competition, entrepreneurship, and innovation can hamper the American economy. These need to be eliminated or modified to revitalize a competitive market."

The FTC has issued a Request for Information (RFI), inviting the public to comment on how federal regulations may harm competition. The inquiry seeks perspectives from various stakeholders, including consumers, workers, businesses, start-ups, potential market entrants, investors, and academics.

Public comments can be submitted to Regulations.gov by May 27, 2025, with all submissions becoming publicly available on the site. Those who have previously submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Justice's Anticompetitive Regulations Task Force do not need to resubmit them for this RFI if they are relevant.

As the agency responsible for promoting competition and protecting consumers, the FTC emphasizes its commitment never to demand money or make threats. Additional information on consumer benefits from competition and guidelines for filing antitrust complaints can be found on the FTC's website and social media channels.
