Erik Schleehauf, a 43-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., has been formally charged with assault of a police officer while armed and assault with a deadly weapon. This follows an incident on April 15, 2025, involving a Metro Transit Police Officer. The charges were announced by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr. and Chief Michael Anzallo of the Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD).
Schleehauf appeared in court today, where it was ordered that he be held without bond. His preliminary hearing is set for April 18, 2025, and will be before Superior Court Judge Robert A. Salerno.
Court documents state that the incident occurred at approximately 2:26 p.m. at the Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro Station. An MTPD Sergeant observed Schleehauf attempting fare evasion by jumping over the glass gates. The Sergeant followed Schleehauf to the escalators and attempted to stop him. Schleehauf then allegedly used a sharpened, pointed tool, hidden on his person, to stab the Sergeant in the face, resulting in puncture wounds. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Schleehauf was arrested on-site following the attack. The investigation into the case is ongoing, led by the Metro Transit Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Nickolas Reck is prosecuting the case.
It has been emphasized that all charges are merely allegations at this stage, and all defendants are entitled to the presumption of innocence until found guilty in a court of law.
