Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in a discussion with Prime Minister Stuart Young of Trinidad and Tobago, aiming to reinforce the bilateral relationship between the two countries. The dialogue centered on shared interests in regional energy security and economic cooperation.
According to spokesperson Tammy Bruce, Secretary Rubio acknowledged the significance of energy security for Trinidad and Tobago's prosperity. He stated, "Any outcomes of sanctions upon the Maduro regime and Venezuela is in no way indicative of our relationship with Trinidad and Tobago and the value we place on it." Rubio also highlighted the strategic importance of Trinidad and Tobago’s energy initiatives and praised Young’s leadership in this area.
Both leaders agreed on a collaborative approach to pursue solutions that align with U.S. objectives regarding Venezuela while safeguarding Trinidad and Tobago's interests. "He welcomed Prime Minister Young’s exploration of viable options that support the country’s energy needs while remaining consistent with U.S. sanctions policy," Bruce reported.
Prime Minister Young, in turn, reaffirmed his government's dedication to responsible development in the energy sector and regional security cooperation. Secretary Rubio reiterated the U.S. commitment to supporting democratic governance and ensuring long-term stability throughout the Caribbean.
