Damani Lamont Carmon, 31, was sentenced to 24 months in prison for possessing a Glock firearm during a traffic stop in April 2024. U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr., ATF Special Agent Anthony Spotswood, and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith announced the sentencing.
Carmon pled guilty on December 6, 2024, to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Alongside the prison sentence, Chief Judge James E. Boasberg mandated three years of supervised release.
Court documents reveal that on April 30, 2024, MPD officers stopped Carmon's vehicle on the 1800 block of Benning Road Northeast for a traffic infringement. Officers discovered an open container of tequila and a Glock 23 .40 caliber firearm with 14 rounds in the vehicle's center console. DNA testing linked the firearm to Carmon.
Federal law prohibits Carmon, a previously convicted felon, from possessing firearms. He was convicted in 2021 of assault with intent to kill and carrying a pistol without a license due to a 2019 Washington, D.C. gas station shooting. At the time of the arrest related to the Glock, Carmon was on supervised release for the prior offense.
Held without bond since October 1, 2024, Carmon was investigated by the ATF and MPD under Project Safe Neighborhoods. The FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, provided support.
The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rachel Craft, with support from Assistant U.S. Attorneys Paul V. Courtney and Kyle R. Mirabelli.
