Senior Bureau Official Sean O’Neill completed a visit to Vietnam from April 16 to 20 as part of the year-long commemoration marking 30 years of U.S.-Vietnam diplomatic relations.
In Hanoi, O’Neill engaged with Vietnamese officials on various topics under the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Discussions included enhancing economic cooperation and addressing trade imbalances. They also addressed regional and global challenges related to peace, prosperity, and security, with a focus on resolving disputes peacefully and ensuring freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea and elsewhere.
O’Neill's agenda also included addressing illegal immigration, human trafficking, cyberscam operations, and other transnational crimes impacting both nations and the broader region.
Additionally, O’Neill observed dioxin remediation efforts at Bien Hoa Air Base. This joint initiative between the United States and Vietnam exemplifies bilateral efforts to confront the legacies of the Vietnam War.
