Tyriq Williams, a 31-year-old resident of the District of Columbia, has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the 2023 shooting death of Terry Clark. The announcement came from U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr. and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
The plea agreement, accepted by Superior Court Judge Todd E. Edelman, includes a proposed prison sentence ranging from 14 to 18 years, followed by supervised release. Sentencing has been scheduled for July 19, 2025.
The incident occurred on January 7, 2023. Williams and his girlfriend encountered Terry Clark at the Navy Yard Metro Station. Though the men were strangers, an altercation resulted in Williams shooting Clark once after they exited the station. Williams then returned to the station, traveled to Congress Heights Metro Station by train, and later took a bus to his job. He was picked up by a friend who assisted in his transport.
The shooting itself was not recorded; however, authorities obtained video footage from the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority that facilitated the tracking of Williams' movements before and after the incident. A search of his home uncovered the clothing he was wearing on the night of the shooting.
Williams has been held since his arrest on January 20, 2023. The investigation involved both the Metropolitan Police Department and Metro Transit Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Molly K. Smith and Jamie Carter prosecuting the case. Former Assistant U.S. Attorney John Interrante also contributed to the investigation.
