Clinton J. Johnson U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma
A Mexican national previously deported after serving a prison sentence for killing his infant son has been indicted for unlawfully re-entering the United States in Catoosa. U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson announced the indictment against Carlos Ambriz Estrada, 53, for Unlawful Reentry of a Removed Alien, following his removal in January 2006.
U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson stated, "After serving time in prison for killing his 38-day-old son, Ambriz Estrada was deported. That did not stop him from unlawfully returning to the United States and living in our community. Prosecutors are working in coordinated efforts with law enforcement to help keep the citizens in the Northern District safe from violent criminals like Ambriz Estrada."
ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Dallas Field Office Acting Director Josh Johnson added, "This subject’s criminal record underscores the significant danger he represents to our community, particularly with the serious charge and conviction for killing his own child. Our officers remain committed to enhancing public safety by apprehending and removing criminal aliens who violate immigration laws."
Immigration Customs Enforcement's Fugitive Operations Team began investigating Ambriz Estrada in March due to his previous conviction for deliberate homicide in Montana and a suspicion of unlawful presence in the United States. Authorities found Ambriz Estrada residing in Catoosa without permission to re-enter the country after his deportation.
Ambriz Estrada's prior conviction dates back to 1994 when he pleaded guilty to deliberate homicide after law enforcement and medical professionals discovered his 36-day-old baby had suffered severe injuries, leading to brain death at 38 days old. After serving nearly 10 years of a 40-year sentence, he was released and deported in 2006.
The ongoing case involves the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations and Homeland Security Investigations, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Ammon Brisolara handling prosecution. It's part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at addressing illegal immigration and associated criminal activity.
An indictment is an allegation, and Ambriz Estrada is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
