Law enforcement across the Northern District of West Virginia is set to participate in the DEA's Drug Take Back Day scheduled for Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Acting U.S. Attorney Randolph J. Bernard is urging residents to utilize this event to dispose of unused and unnecessary prescription medications to mitigate misuse risks.
Bernard shared his thoughts on the initiative: “The Drug Take Back program is an excellent opportunity to take inventory of the leftover and outdated prescription drugs that are stored in your home. Providing the unused drugs to the DEA as part of the program is a great way to make your home a safe place for those you love. It safeguards our children and prevents abuse of the drugs by others. It also keeps the discarded drugs out of landfills and our water.”
Accepted items include tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid prescription drug forms. Liquids, like cough syrups, should remain in their original, sealed containers. Vaping devices and cartridges will be accepted if lithium batteries are removed, but syringes, sharps, and illicit substances will not be collected.
There are 4,500 collection sites available nationwide. For more information or to find a nearby location, visit https://www.dea.gov/takebackday
